Martie Says

" I have a passion for repurposing vintage linens and creating one-of-a-kind heirloom quilted pieces. Last year I developed my unique skill of making custom quilted keepsake heirloom vintage postcards out of vintage embroidered linens, laces, appliques, and other notions.

The backside features my exclusive vintage postcard fabric backing that can be personalized. The postcards can be mailed in envelopes, given and gifts, used as decor, or acquired as collectibles.

"Parasol Belle" started out as a vintage embroidered dresser scarf. Embroideries of this type began appearing in the early 1920's. I placed the embroidery atop and underlayment of cotton sateen and added my custom quilting. Afterwards, the quilt was cut to size and hand-dyed using a tinting technique I developed using Inktense. This enhancement technique allows for the color saturation to be subtle against the background and embroidered threads. I then hand sewed Miyuki 15/0 seed beads to embellish the embroidery. I added the vintage postcard fabric backing to the back of the quilt and finished with a machine satin stitch. I made sure to leave the delicate crocheted lace trim of the skirt and petticoat untouched to preserve the uniqueness.

I credit Kelly Cline, Cindy Needham, Bethanne Nemesh, and the late Jeanne Harrison for influencing my vintage quilting journey as instructors, mentors and friends. I hope by preserving vintage embroideries in this way, they can be appreciated, admired, and passed down through generations to come.
